Green sorters for Korea Express

Crisplant awarded a contract to install ‘green’ sorters in Korea Express’ new parcel distribution centre

  • State-of-the-art LS-4000 sorter combines the industry’s lowest energy consumption with ultra-high levels of reliability and availability
  • Reduces energy consumption by up to 75% compared to conventional sorter technology
  • Provides major reductions in carbon dioxide emissions as well as life-cycle costs
  • Minimises the environmental impact of new distribution centre at Daejon

Crisplant – a leading global supplier of automated material handling systems – has been awarded a contract by Korea Express to install a state-of-the-art ‘green’ automated sorter system at the logistics company’s new parcel distribution centre in Daejon, Korea.

The automated system will be based on Crisplant’s LS-4000 sorters, which combine the industry’s most energy-efficient motor technology with ultra-high levels of reliability and availability. The LS-4000 are the only sorters to use Linear Synchronous Motors which achieve a 75% reduction in energy consumption, compared to sorters with conventional motor technology. This provides a major reduction in carbon dioxide emissions which supports ‘green’ initiatives and minimises the environmental impact of the new distribution centre.

Their low-friction design means that LS-4000 sorters also achieve significantly lower life-cycle costs, as well as ultra-high levels of reliability and system availability, compared to conventional sorter technology.

The system which Crisplant will install at Korea Express’ parcel distribution centre comprises two LS-4000E tilt-tray sorters with twenty induction lines and a LS-4000CB cross-belt sorter with seven inductions. The tilt-tray sorters will handle large items at a total sorting capacity of over 32,000 parcels per hour, whilst the LS-4000CB cross-belt sorter provides a capacity of more than 15,000 items per hour for high-friction and fragile items. The modular design of the LS-4000 sorters allows Crisplant to minimise the system’s footprint and to provide a custom configuration for the Daejon distribution centre.

A factory approval test (FAT) of the new system, attended by representatives from Korea Express, has been carried out at Crisplant’s test facility in Aarhus, Denmark. A full emulation of the system’s software and hardware will also be performed prior to installation, which is due to begin on 1 April 2010. The system is scheduled for hand-over on 1 November 2010.

Korea Express is the largest parcel courier company in Korea, with over 4,700 employees and annual revenue of US$1.7 billion. Their network of 10,000 local parcel shops and 60 parcel centres handle delivery throughout Korea and offer services such as 24-hour parcel acceptance, 365-day delivery, and an air service that guarantees parcel delivery to any location in Korea within five hours.

Ole Vitting Petersen, Sales Director, Crisplant Asia Pacific, commented: “Crisplant’s strategy has been for our systems to combine benchmark material-handling efficiency with state-of-the-art technology to reduce cost and carbon dioxide emissions. Customers are increasingly choosing systems which can demonstrate a high level of operational reliability, which supports high levels of customer service, and ultra-low energy consumption to demonstrate their commitment to ‘green’ initiatives. ”

Crisplant LS-4000 sorters are already installed in a wide range of markets and more installations are expected within the post and parcel sector.
